    1/4 cup sourdough starter

    1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

Why This Recipe Works

  • Using a sourdough starter adds a unique, tangy flavor and chewy texture that sets these brownies apart from the rest.
  • The simplicity of the recipe makes it easy to whip up a batch, with only a few ingredients and no need for special equipment.
  • The richness of the chocolate is balanced by the tangy, slightly sour flavor of the sourdough starter.

Key Ingredients

Sourdough starter is the star of the show in these brownies, and using a high-quality, active starter with a tangy flavor is essential. For the best results, use a starter that’s at least 24 hours old and has been fed recently. As for the chocolate, we recommend using high-quality, dark chocolate for the best flavor. If you’re using chocolate chips, make sure they’re of high-quality and have a high cocoa percentage for the best flavor.

One last note: while these brownies are best enjoyed fresh, they freeze well and can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days.

Ingredients

2 cups all-purpose flour

1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

1/4 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature

1 cup granulated sugar

2 large eggs

1 tsp vanilla extract

1/4 cup sourdough starter

1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

Directions

1
Preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C). Grease an 8-inch square baking pan with cooking spray or butter and line it with parchment paper.

2
Melt the butter and sugar in a medium saucepan over low heat, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat and stir in the cocoa powder until well combined.

3
Whisk in the eggs one at a time, followed by the vanilla extract and sourdough starter. The batter will be thick and lumpy.

4
Stir in the flour and chocolate chips until just combined. The batter should still be slightly lumpy.

5
Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and smooth the top with a spatula. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with a few moist crumbs attached.

Storage & Reheating

To store leftovers, let the brownies cool completely in the pan before cutting into squares and storing in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days. For a warm, gooey brownie, reheat in the microwave for 10-15 seconds or in the oven at 350°F (180°C) for a few minutes. Enjoy!
