Key Ingredients

We recommend using high-quality ingredients to ensure the best flavor and texture in your strawberry heart danishes. For the flour, we suggest using a Grade-A all-purpose flour that contains a balance of protein and starch. For the sugar, an organic cane sugar will add a rich sweetness to the pastry. For the eggs, large eggs will provide the necessary moisture and leavening. For the butter, we recommend using high-quality European-style butter that contains a high percentage of fat. For the milk, we suggest using 2% or whole milk for the best flavor and texture.

Yield:
4 Servings

Ingredients

2 cups flour

1 tsp salt

1 tsp granulated sugar

1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened

1 large egg

1 cup sliced strawberries

1 tsp vanilla extract

1/4 cup confectioners’ sugar

1/4 tsp active dry yeast

Directions

1
To make the dough, in a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt, and sugar. Add the softened butter and use a pastry blender or your fingers to work the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.

2
In a separate bowl, whisk together the egg, milk, and vanilla extract. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix until a shaggy dough forms.

3
Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes, until the dough becomes smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with plastic wrap, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size.

4
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Punch down the dough and roll it out into a large rectangle, about 1/4-inch thick. Cut the dough into heart shapes, using a cookie cutter or a knife.

5
Place the heart-shaped dough on the prepared baking sheet and brush the tops with the beaten egg. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the danishes are golden brown. Allow them to cool on a wire rack for 5 minutes before serving.

Storage & Reheating

To store the danishes, place them in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days. To reheat, wrap the danishes in foil and bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (180°C) for 5-7 minutes, or until warmed through.
