Meet Mochi
Meet Mochi, the official kitchen supervisor, curious observer, and constant companion of Recipenly!
Mochi is a fluffy gray-and-white cat with bright amber eyes, a calm expression, and a remarkable ability to appear whenever Maya begins preparing a recipe.
He quickly became part of Maya Collins’s everyday routine and eventually part of Recipenly too. Whether Maya is organizing ingredients, testing a recipe, arranging a finished dish, or working at the kitchen table, Mochi is rarely far away.
He is observant, patient, quietly curious, and always interested in whatever is happening around him. Most of the time, he simply sits nearby and watches Maya work as though supervising the entire process.
Why the name Mochi?
Mochi’s name feels perfectly suited to him.
His soft coat, round face, gentle personality, and relaxed way of settling into the warmest place in the room all make the name feel natural.
He may look serious when he is watching a recipe being prepared, but behind that focused expression is a calm and affectionate kitchen companion who enjoys being close to Maya.
Kitchen supervision
Mochi is the official kitchen supervisor around here.
He does not taste the recipes, and all ingredients and prepared dishes are kept safely out of his reach. His role is mostly observational: watching Maya measure ingredients, listening to the sounds of cooking, and inspecting the finished result from a safe distance.
Some days he sits beside the counter. On others, he watches from his favorite nearby spot until the cooking is finished.
He is especially attentive during breakfast photography, when colorful berries, warm pancakes, and maple syrup are arranged in front of the camera.
Photo bombing
Every time food is photographed for Recipenly, Mochi seems to know exactly where the camera is.
He may sit beside the photography table, appear behind a plate, watch from the edge of the counter, or quietly move into the background just before Maya takes the photograph.
Sometimes his fluffy tail, white paws, or bright amber eyes appear unexpectedly in the frame. On other occasions, he sits so perfectly beside the finished dish that he becomes the main subject of the photograph.
Maya always keeps him at a safe distance from ingredients that are unsuitable for cats, especially desserts containing chocolate, coffee, or other foods that are not intended for him.
Life outside the kitchen
Mochi’s day is not entirely devoted to supervising recipes.
He enjoys accompanying Maya on occasional market visits from the comfort of his pet stroller, observing people from a safe distance, and watching fresh ingredients being selected for upcoming recipes.
At home, he prefers quiet corners, soft blankets, sunny windows, and comfortable places close to the kitchen.
After a busy morning of watching Maya work, Mochi is usually ready for a long and peaceful nap.
Mochi has five modes
Mochi is a fairly simple fellow. He generally operates in five modes:
- Watching Maya cook
- Following Maya around the kitchen
- Inspecting ingredients from a safe distance
- Appearing unexpectedly in recipe photographs
- Sleeping
When he is not observing a new recipe, accompanying Maya around the house, or investigating the sound of a cupboard opening, he is usually resting nearby.
Part of the Recipenly family
Recipenly is first and foremost a food website, but Mochi has naturally become part of its personality.
He appears in kitchen moments, market visits, behind-the-scenes photographs, and the occasional unexpected corner of a recipe image.
His relationship with Maya is an important part of those moments. While Maya develops, prepares, and photographs the recipes, Mochi remains nearby as her quiet companion and unofficial supervisor.
Readers may also find small Mochi moments throughout selected Recipenly posts, sharing glimpses of his life beyond the recipes.

People often say that pets begin to resemble their owners.
Maya once thought she and Mochi were completely different. But after seeing their matching focused expressions whenever a new dish is placed on the counter, she is no longer so certain.
